Learn basic Chen-style tai chi movements and the Tai Chi Kung Fu Fan form, composed of 52 steps divided into 6 segments.
This class is open to tai chi beginners.
The fan is not one of the traditional weapons forms of tai chi, but is relatively modern, even though a version of the fan was used in Chinese history as herald and part of ceremonial and processional symbols of the emperor. The Tai Chi Kung Fu Fan form was developed and prepared over years to support the Chinese application to hold the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. It was developed especially to attract adults and older adults to do physical activities as China prepared to host the Olympics and was first publicly performed in 2001 in Tienamen Square by 2008 performers.
The form is accompanied by music. It switches from slow to fast and slow again, it is dynamic and attractive. The fan form mixes Chen-style and Yang-style hand forms as well as sword techniques. As with other tai chi forms, it helps to strengthen core muscles and lower limbs, and supports development of wrist and hand flexibility. The form also supports awareness of balance and coordination of body movements. Moreover, it is fun to learn, colourful, attractive and fun to perform.
This class started as a free 12-week course funded by London Borough of Waltham Forest Community Chest grant and has now become one of our new regular classes.
