10-week tai chi and qigong course. Mondays, 12:00 – 1:00pm, starts on 23 February. Pastures Youth Centre, 15 Davies Lane, Leytonstone E11 3DR.
This is a joint project of Dao Lu and the African Caribbean Community Health Network (ACCHN), to bring weekly tai chi and qi gong exercises to the African Caribbean residents of the borough. The course costs £3/session drop-in, or £27 for block booking the whole course (10 weeks)/£13.50 for 5-week booking. Registration is required, by email to info@daolu.co.uk, or by phone – call Joan on 0208 593 6976.
The course is suitable for beginners, and for all ability levels. We hope to introduce the powerful benefits of tai chi to residents in the borough who access physical activity and sport opportunities the least, especially the over 50s and over 60s black men and women. This project received in-kind support from the Council, as part of its new strategy to get more residents physically active – “A Million More Days” as a way of helping address health inequalities in the borough.
Participants will learn basic tai chi movements to improve balance, posture, and awareness of the body. They will be learning a “new language for the body”, in doing so, helping increase their mental focus and improve their cognitive capacity. Participants will also learn a qi gong routine, which helps to cultivate and strengthen energy through breath and movement.
